DM5552 Design Research Assignment: Critique

Paper 1: Design for Social Value: Using Design to Improve the Impact of CSR:

1: Overall Critique: 200 Words:

This paper was good research since it included the fundamentals of a good research paper. For example, the article was well-detailed, clearly explained what the researchers did, the type of research that they used and people who were involved, and how long it took to combine the overall research. According to the fundamentals of a good research article, if you cannot follow what the researcher did and you find out you are left guessing what happened then that research was biased and lacked any basic knowledge about the research article (Hughes, 2001). On the contrary, this article was good since it followed and adhered to these basic elements which make it an ideal research article.

Some things make a research article authentic and they include conceptualization and theoretical basis of the work, analytical framework and hypotheses, research design, discussion, and conclusions of the paper (Hughes, 2001). What makes this article real and quite good is that it focuses on these basics since the authors clearly state every step of the research and conclude by telling the reader about their findings and documented in the article. Overall, we can conclude by saying that this was an excellent research article due to the significance of the topic in discussion among other essentials of a good research paper.

2: Critical Examination On the Four Aspects: 400 Words

2:1: Originality:

ADVANCED PROFESSIONAL ROLES & VALUES

The originality of this paper was good since it involved basic elements of a good research paper which entails detailed information and research methods among other things.

2:2: Research quality:

The research quality of this paper was excellent since the authors used the best research method which is a qualitative research approach which according to the basics of a good research paper requires an in-depth analysis, discussions, and interaction with numerous stakeholders. The main reason why a qualitative research design is the best type of research is because it involves different parties from different places towards raising the issue or the problem being addressed and identifying meaningful outcomes out of a complex social topic such as CSR (Choi, et al, 2018). Therefore, for utilizing this method of research I can say that the quality of this article is good.  The article sought to have a good understanding of the issues related to CSR and social values in both practical and theoretical perspectives that showed a comprehensive picture of social corporate responsibility (Agudelo et al., 2019).

2:3: Usefulness:

The usefulness of this article was to educate business owners and scholars about the significance of corporate social responsibility (CSR) which promotes a company’s image to the public (Adnan et al., 2018). According to Holding (2013), every organization should appreciate the importance of good CSR such as improved corporate image and creativity. Therefore, the article was quite useful because it enlightens the reader on these issues. Also, the article clearly stated that good CSR increases customers’ loyalty and employees’ satisfaction, and improves creativity which is the core element of a successful organization (Choi, et al, 2018). Therefore, the usefulness of this article was to enlighten the reader on the essence of good CSR.

2:4: Presentation quality:

The presentation quality of this article was quite good in every aspect. The article was clear and straight to the point and most importantly, it painted a clear picture of CSR. For example, reading through the article, one cannot miss noticing how succinct the authors were in presenting and creating a clear and practical perspective of a comprehensive picture of social value.

Paper 2: Design for Social Enterprises: How Design Thinking Can Support Social Innovation Within Social Enterprises

1: Overall Critique: 200 Words:

This paper was good as it clearly stated its objectives among other essentials. For example, in the beginning, the authors argue that the main focus of the paper was to investigate and analyze the importance of design thinking towards sustainable social innovation within the modern business environment. Based on my knowledge of research papers, the authors of this article did excellent work in exploring this topic. However, there are numerous guideline that I believe the authors failed to follow. First of all, the authors failed to introduce the topic, lacked, background introduction of the issue being discussed, and the table of content is missing. Moreover, the paper is not quite coherent which made it hard to follow at some point (Prescott, 2019).

There are basic elements that make a research article outstanding such as research questions and coherence. Therefore, if a paper lacks any of these elements then it becomes an average paper like this one. While the authors of this paper did a good job of educating the reader on the importance of design thinking in today’s global market, it failed to pose major research questions such as why a business needs to integrate design thinking in its operations among others. Overall, I found the paper good based on the discussion topic.

2: Critical Examination On the Four Aspects: 400 Words

2:1: Originality:

The originality of this paper was average since it did not show clear guidelines of research methods and did not include outside forces such as stakeholders and other scholars in the study (Hughes, 2001). The main objective of consulting with outside forces such as talking to stakeholders is to try and identify the issue or problem that needs to be addressed and reading through this article I did not see any involvement of stakeholders. On the contrary, the article settled on questioners and participants who did not have any idea of the issue being addressed and some did not have background knowledge on business innovation which made the article a bit biased.

2:2: Research quality:

The research quality of this paper was not bad since the article emphasized majorly on the research study. According to a research study on the dynamics of a good research study, the quality of research depends mainly on the quality of the study report (Tullu, 2019). All in all, from the article’s findings and the way it presented facts, the research quality is commendable (Hughes, 2001). However, I found that the article failed at some point to report study methods that were used in line with the evidence-based guidelines like CONSORT statement for randomized trials.

2:3: Usefulness:

The usefulness of this article was to educate the reader about the importance of design thinking such as differentiating organizational brands and becoming competitive. For example, the article argues that social enterprises and social innovation are the best alternatives to the failure of the public and private sectors. According to this article, design thinking is important to organizations because it helps them to become more innovative, introduce organizational products to the market fast, and differentiate a company’s products (Selloni & Corubolo, 2017).  Therefore, as a business student and an aspiring business owner, I think this article was quite useful because it has taught me the basic dynamics of business and brand.

2:4: Presentation quality:

The presentation quality of this article was average since it lacked the basic elements of a good research paper. For example, although the article had a brief introduction it lacked basic dynamics such as hypotheses, description methods, table of content, graphs that are related to the article’s findings, and interpretation of the research data (Hughes, 2001). In addition, the article lacked research questions, was not coherent and its findings were not constituent among other issues that made me lose focus of the paper at some point marketing (Sharma et al 2017).
